At this time of year the shad will school up and different species of fish will use them as their primary food source.  The bass and trout will follow the shad wherever they go and feed on them throughout the day.

The catfish in New Melones will also hunt and chase the shad along with other predator fish and they will clean up after the feeding frenzies.

For this reason frozen shad has become a go to bait, for catfishing.  Frozen shad will work just fine right out of the package but, there are a couple things you can do to make it an even more effective choice of bait.

The first would be to soak it in Pautzke’s Fire Brine for 24-36 hours.  This process will make it easier to put on the hook and will also add color.  Adding color can make your bait stand out amongst all of the millions of shad that are in the lake.

The next thing that can be done is the application of scent.  While your shad is in the brining process it can also be absorbing scent.

We will be brining and adding scent to some of our packaged frozen shad.  Grab a bag the next time you hit the water in search of that contest winning cat.
